Is this the first Pre in Africa?
I bought O2 German-version GSM Palm Pre a couple of weeks ago from my trusty importer and on-line cellphone retailer Ca-Cellular www.cacell.co.za. The keyboard layout is qwertz not qwerty, but I have been following the Palm Pre’s journey with interest for a long time so wasn’t going to be put off by one misplaced key. Been a Palm fan since way back; still take my Treo 650 out of its box from time to time; and have high hopes of WebOS and the Palm Pre/Pixi.
Have been using the Pre for a couple of weeks now, and have mixed feelings about it. More about that later, but I was just wondering if my Pre could be the first one in use in Africa? Wonder how I could find out.

Hi Alastair. I am still a Pre user – on and off. I switch phones every week or so. Right now I am using my Motorola Milestone/Droid. Have also yesterday flashed the rom on my HTC Hero to Android 2.1, so am trying that out. But the Pre remains one of my favourites. I am running 1.4 and yes I have app catalog issues. Have been unable to see any apps on the catalog since I got the Pre, but my app issues got worse when I upgraded to 1.3.5 and 1.4. With 1.4 I lost even the ability to download apps via Preware.
Do you have the latest version of Preware as advised by precentral ?
Bit of history, I have been a Palm OS user for almost 6 years now Treo 600,Treo650,Treo 680 and Centro.(I am a die hard user)
Got very amped with Pre when it was first announced……waited and waited, ITE(Palm ZA) to date are not too excited about Pre or even Pre Plus ? ! So I have opted for the German O2 ……I hope there aren’t too many bugs….I will be operating on Vodacom so it will be intresting to see what happens.
What puts my mind at ease is there are may Aussies using German Pre’s without a hitch so we will see !

I used all of those Treos myself except for the Centro. Also used a 750 for while, the Windows one. Was quite good for a Windows phone. I should prob hard reset my Pre then reinstall Preware. The problem I have with Preware is when I click to install an app it opens the Palm App Cat and of course that won’t allow me to download the app as the catalog is not available here. Don’t know how Palm controls the Catalog access, prob via mobile network? I also have the German O2 Pre which I bought from cacell.co.za. Where did you get yours? Apart from the app problem the phone has worked well. O, and the maps installed on thde phone doesn’t work.
Bought on Bid or buy from ship and sell which I assume came from CACEll.
What maps can you use for the GPS ?
I couldn’t get any maps on the Pre’s map app.

It puts your Pre into developer mode which it needs to be in order to install patches and apps via webosquickinstall and preware
