Cool Nokia N8 coming to SA also

Apparently SA can expect the sleek Nokia N8 in Q3 2010. I don’t all the specs yet, but what I do know is that it will run Symbian 3 which promises to be proper improvement on the current version running on all of Nokia’s S60 phones. With support for hardware accelerated graphics, multiple home pages, pinch to zoom, etc. The N8 will have a 3.5inch touchscreen, a capacitive one, not the usual resistive one like in the N97. This is a major step in the right direction I think, which will make the Nokia and Symbian significantly more user-friendly and responsive. Anyone who has used an HTC HD2 will attest to the difference a capacitive touchscreen can make. The HD2 is the first, and probably the last, Windows mobile phone with a capacitive screen, and it is a pleasure to use compared to its resistive screen predecessors. The N8 will also have HDMI output which means you can stick it directly into you HD TV and watch Youtube on your TV in HD. It will also have a 12MP camera! The rest of the N8’2 spec will be reasonably high-end including a 680MHz processor, which used to be top-end, but there are already a bunch of phones running 1GHz processors on the market today. The N8 looks pretty cool to me. I hope Symbian 3 handles full HTML format emails. You know what would make the N8 even cooler? A physical qwerty keyboard. So gaze upon this leaked picture of what might turn out to be the qwerty endowed version of the N8:

Any news on when the NOKIA E7 will be avilable in South Africa?

  7. No news yet. I am in periodic contact with Nokia RSA’s communications manager, and she also doesn’t know. The N8 was originally expected in September already, but has now been delayed (world wide). Hopefully the E7 arrives here before the end of year. I am definitely getting one.

  8. I see that http://www.cacell.co.za lists their expected date for the E7 as 30 November 2010. They usually get it before the local networks, as they import.

Already mid October and no N8. Is this phone ever going to arrive in SA or must we just go out and buy something from the opposition. I am a Nokia supporter but boy are they msking it difficult!!!

  9. Don’t know when it will be available on contract through the mobile networks, but see you can get it from http://www.excellular.co.za at R5,699.

@Des, if you bothered to have a look you would find that this phone wil only be reaching the UK pre orders (ppl that have paid cash in advance) this week, so the fact that we can expect it end Oct, begin Nov is aceptable to most i would think.

I would like to know when will the green and blue n8 be in SA

  14. @Mohammed. I don’t when they are going to be available. Not even sure that those colours will be available at all in SA. For what it is worth I have the dark grey one, and it looks great, better than the green one I think.

  15. @Yaseen

You are right. It did turn out to be the E7. At the time I wrote the piece it was still a rumour though.

You should remove the leaked picture, the one with the QWERTY keypad is a Nokia E7, not the N8.

    • November 13th, 2010

    Hi,
Please tell me why I cant get the n8 in black/grey on my vodacom contract, this just seems lame as its advertised in a range of colours, why must the colour of my phone be decided by my service provider. I really like this phone but am now considering a different make as I only want a black phone. Is there a way that I can get the black/grey model on my vodacom contract.

    Wyatt

  16. @Wyatt

I think it is the result of the small size of the SA market relative to the other markets that Nokia is supplying. The local networks get allocated only certain colours. I bought a grey/black one and think it is the best colour for the phone. Maybe now is the time for you to change networks if you can get your colour from a different network? You can keep your number. Or you can buy my one. I used it for a few days only. Have since moved on to a, dare I say it, better phone.

i wonder when will the nokia E7 be available in South Africa. i am eagerly awaiting that one. i have a bunch of cellphones from Android to WinMo but none satisfies my needs clearly. The android phone Galaxy S despite being supersexy and fast to use has got a very poor battery life. And beside that the cost for daily use is quite high on our SA market as many applications use the net thus data. My Samsung Omnia has found a new life as a full time Garmin navigator and is good at it. i just believe the E7 might be the answer for business minded applications or a good Blackberry. Anyone can help with the availability of Nokia E7 in South Africa?

  17. I think the E7 will be coming next year only, and probably not very early in the year either. It has not been released anywhere yet as far as I know, and is expected in the UK in January only. I am definitely getting one when it becomes available, although if the software is exactly the same as the N8′s, which I believe it will be, ie Symbian3, I am less positive about it. You may want to check out the HTC Desire Z, which is HTC’s latest Android qwerty. Quite nice with a very cool swivel action to the keyboard. But read my post on the Galaxy S, it might just change your mind. I like the Galaxy S, a lot: http://tinyurl.com/3ac6rub

When will SA expect to see the others colours, the orange, blue and green Nokia N8 phones?

  18. My guess is never. The SA market is low down the Nokia global priority list.

is the nokia n8 available in any vodacom sho, if it is can u pls tell me where it is…. preferably in gauteng… thank u

  19. It is available at Vodacom shops. Follow this link to see where your closest shop is located. Question is though, why do you want an N8? There are much better phones available at the same price. Like the Samsung Galaxy S.
