Motorola Droid 2 coming soon

Engadget reports that Verizon will be launching the Droid 2 in August. Apparently it will be launched with Froyo 2.2 making it the first Android phone to be released with the latest version of the OS. I have also heard that it will have a 1GHz processor, compared with the 600MHz engine of the original Droid. I hope that the Milestone 2 will follow quickly on the heels of its US twin. I still use my Milestone regularly. Still the best qwerty based Android phone available currently. It is now freely available in South Africa, but the advertising has been very sparse. Think I have seen one ad for it only – in a Sunday newspaper. Haven’t seen anyone around here with a Milestone in their hands, except for yours truly.

Is the Milestone/Droid 2 ever going to be available in South Africa??
I really can’t find out anywhere..
I am really hoping it will come here, yet if it’s not ever going to, I don’t want to waste anymore time and I want to then just go get the Milestone 1..
Seeing you seemed to know about the Milestone 1 in SA, hoping you will know if Milestone/Droid 2 is coming here??
(BTW, I am not bothered about waiting a few months for it)
    Please do try help out

  1. It will eventually come, but don’t hold your breath. It is likely to take a long time. SA doesn’t feature high on Motorola’s distribution list. If you are willing to buy it for cash, and not on a contract, then keep an eye on http://www.cacell.co.za. They get the latest phones very quickly after international/US release. I bought my Milestone from them in February already.

Awesome, thanks :) I went to look at the Milestone today. Awesome phone, but the keyboard: it looks exceptionally hard and if it not sensitive my nails will probably make holes in the keys in no time. I’m paying for this phone myself, saved forever, and can’t afford that. The important thing I want from this phone, is a good QWERTY Keyboard for easy texting (I’m a teenager, obviously) Is the Milestone hard to type on? Is the Droid 2 better? I think I will wait it out for the Droid 2, will have to get over my impatience for this phone tho..

  2. The Milestone can be a bit hard to type on. The d-pad and bit that juts out to the right, when holding the phone in landscape, pushes into your hand while typing, making it a bit uncomfortable. On the upside the keys are large and well-spaced. The Droid 2′s keyboard is an improvement judging by the reviews – keys are still stiff to press though. If you are after a good qwerty keyboard for texting why not take a look at the Blackberry. Many models to choose from, in different colours (white, pink). Also the blackberry contracts with Vodacom and MTN includes a fixed monthly cost for unlimited data usage (web browsing, mxit, youtube, etc). There is a new Blackberry Torch on the way, which will arrive in SA long before the Droid 2. It has a slide-out qwerty with touchscreen (like the Palm Pre) and runs the new improved Blackberry OS 6. Check my post on it: http://getsmartphone.net/2010/08/rim-launches-palm-pre-clone/

Ah yes I do see your point, that phone looks really good.. But the thing is I am really interested in Android, I saw it on my friends phone and comparing it to what I’ve seen of Blackberry, well for me Android just comes out tops. The Droid 2 looks like it got a good keyboard from the pics, but you never know.. I see what you are saying, holding the Milestone shop demo in my hands today, I felt the keys are uncomfortably to the left, especially since I have small hands and to get over that d-pad thing, not so good. Do you know of any other Android phones with a slide QWERTY keyboard? I do value advice, coz these phones are expensive and I think being a bit fussy about what I buy is wise.. Thanks for all your help

  3. Haven’t seen any other Android sliders in local shops, but the two most likely to arrive here if not here already are the Samsung Galaxy S and the Sony Ericsson Mini Pro. Check them out.

  4. I have it on good authority that the Droid 2 will arrive in SA the last quarter of 2010, somewhere between October and December. Before then we will see the arrival of the Motorola BackFlip and Milestone XT720. The BackFlip also has a qwerty keyboard, which flips back, so may want to check it out. @Tiffany
