Watch out iPad here comes the PlayBook

RIM launched its version of the iPad yesterday. It is called the PlayBook and as you can see from the picture, it looks cool. Impressive specs also: 1GHz dual-core processor, lots of RAM, 7 inch 1024 x 600 capacitive multi-touch screen, front and rear facing cameras, Flash support, hardware graphics acceleration, 1080 HD video, HDMI output, and weighs only 400g (compared with iPad at 730g).

The software also looks promising. It uses an OS developed by QNX, who was recently acquired by RIM. The interface looks a lot like WebOS, which can only be good from a UI perspective. Apparently the PlayBook will also sync with your Blackberry phone (remember the Palm Folio?).

The biggest hurdle for the PlayBook is going to be to get developers to write apps for its new software platform. No apps no play.

First sign of new Palm devices

Take note Palm fans (all three of us in South Africa including me), the first evidence for new Palm phones are surfacing. Thanks to the German certification authority TUV Rheinland, we can now look forward to the P102UNA and P102EWW. These are likely to be the CDMA and GSM versions of a Palm Pre Plus successor. Happy days are here again.

Nokia E7 launched. I want one

The speculation is over. Nokia launched its new flagship qwerty slider the E7 at the Nokia World event. And it is a beauty. They should have called it the Nokia E7 Communicator. Looks good enough to wear the Communicator label. Check the specs:

4 inch tilting AMOLED touch screen. NB the screen is capacitive not resistive. The Finns will have to remove their gloves to operate this screen.
BIG qwerty keyboard
Aluminium body. Going to be lovely to hold.
16GB RAM
1200mAh battery. Would have liked to see a 1500mAh battery as used in the E90, N97, E71, E72.
Quad-band GSM and WCDMA
HDMI port to plug straight into your tv
8MP camera
Runs Symbian 3, which I think is going to be better than most people expect.
Comes bundled with a stack of business software, such Quickoffice Premium, F-Secure Anti-Theft, Mail for Exchange, and most importantly for me with Lotus Notes Traveler.

Should be in shops before the year end.

Nokia also launched the C6 and C7 at the Nokia World. Together with the N8 and the E7 these devices all run Symbian 3. No word of MeeGo.

Nokia E7 to be launched next week?

Rumours of an E7 with a qwerty slider have been doing the rounds for a while now, and with the Nokia World event only one week away, the same rumours are surfacing again, this time with quite real looking pics. Somebody found an XML file on Nokia’s website which appear to confirm that the phone will run Symbian3, with a 640 x 360 display, 8MP camera and a full qwerty keyboard. Essentially an N8 with a downscaled camera and a qwerty keyboard. For the business user. Check the pics below. Am telling you right now, if this is for real, I am definitely getting one. Would love to see Nokia kicking some smartphone butt again. I loved my 9300i, my E90, my E71, and even my E72. Even the N900 has redeeming features. Nokia has always known how to make a good qwerty device. Here’s hoping for another.

Motorola Milestone 2 launched. Coming to SA also

Motorola launched the non-US version of the Droid 2 today, calling it surprise surprise Milestone 2. Apparently the Droid moniker is somehow tied to Verizon in the states, which is why the rest of the world has to make do with the much less catchy Milestone label. Nevertheless, as a happy Milestone 1 owner, I am looking forward to the faster processor (1GHz OMAP), improved keyboard and Android 2.2 Froyo. The Milestone 2 also looks nicer than its older sibling, although still not really a good looking phone. But then, I know a die-hard iPhone user, who after 2 days with the Milestone 1, swore to never go back to iPhone. Go Android. Best news is that the Milestone 2 is due to hit SA shores before the end of 2010. See below for more pictures.

That Nokia N8 is still up for grabs. No one has guessed the right box yet

If you haven’t yet guessed a number of the N8′s box, then you can use the following clue from Nokia RSA to help you: the correct box number is the sum of the N8 features. Click here to enter the competition

I suspect you can calculate the sum of the N8′s features from this text below:

Looking at some of the comments already made about this cutting edge handset, reviewers have found that the Symbian ^3 platform is the perfect fit to power the many demands on the device – and when paired with Nokia’s fresh, new UI, Nokia N8 users will discover that the device fits their mobile lifestyle like none other, supporting on-the-go activities ranging from social networking to visual multitasking.

And there’s much more going on above the platform – the Nokia N8 brings leading imaging capabilities with a 12MP Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash, High Definition (HD) viewing and sharing with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and a Web TV application delivering TV programs, news and entertainment.
The N8 weighs a light and portable 135 grams and has 16 GB of memory. It also comes loaded with our FREE Ovi Maps walk and drive voice-guided navigation, Nokia Messaging and 6-months subscription to Ovi Music Unlimited (previously Comes with Music) Services.
