N900 is kind of a breakthrough in the “mobile computer” industry.
Being a computer that has phone capabilities gives it more advantage over any other notebook, tablet or smartphone (not speaking of performance, its cpu is kinda old but can be overclocked up to 1.15GHz ; which in turn was very fast during 2010 even compared to the iPad).
Ask any N900 power user about what it can do, he will answer “it’s easier to list what it can’t”, for there is nearly nothing a computer can do and N900 can’t.

Running multiple operating systems (multibooting),,controlling core phone capabilities right from the xTerminal(if combined with scripting can make miracles happen),,multitasking,,USB on-the-go (host-mode) was available on it even before nokia announced it in its other phones(you can connect a mouse,keyboard,USB flash drive,Hard Disk Drive,DVD-player,…anything..), ssh, remote_desktop, web_server, ftp_server, php, python, java, qt, gtk, WINE-arm(windows applications compiled for ARM CPUs), games & through emulators(GBA-PS-N64-NES-webOS-…)… .
The list is too long to be described in an article!!

Well, as for now, the N900 can’t (yet) drive a spacecraft; and I think this is the only thing it can’t do

cellphone + 3G + USB + xTerminal + ssh + multiboot + multitask + …. = only N900 :D

you clearly like your N900. Tell me why. I can tell you one thing your N900 can’t do – it can’t receive or send emails via a Lotus Notes corporate email server. It also doesn’t have a good youtube app. And are there any good twitter apps for the N900? And the builtin email app cannot handle a mailbox with hundreds of emails – it gets too slow. The biggest problem with the N900 is that it is a one-off from Nokia, probably the last Nokia phone to run Maemo, probably the last phone to run Maemo. It is a dead end.

loser, you totatlly missed the picture; that’s why this phone isn’t marketed to all users, but to real power users. There isn’t anything my N900 can’t do !
Except for multitouch, but since you don’t like landscape mode, why would you bother …

Yes, I think the Cell-C Smartdata bundle is the best option to go for. Lowest price for data (5c per MB I think) and can also be used to make calls. Can buy sim card only or buy sim card with usb modem, in which case you can use it in your laptop as well. They are also selling a wifi hotspot router for around R600 that can use the same sim/modem.

Hi,

came across your blog when looking for Palm Pre users in SA and saw that you are one…

I will be in SA with my German Pre several times each year and therefore I am looking for a prepaid bundle that makes sense for an always on smartphone (contract is not useful as I would then pay also for the months I am not here).

Do you have any suggestion? Have been looking at the Cell-C SMARTDATA bundle which also includes easychat as far as I understand their website, does this make sense?

It is available at Vodacom shops. Follow this link to see where your closest shop is located. Question is though, why do you want an N8? There are much better phones available at the same price. Like the Samsung Galaxy S.
